Nothing should tarnish the pleasure in owning a beautiful, high-quality furniture item – not even a look into its internals, or to be more precise the large, unmissable 5 mm series-drilled holes that are frequently used. An increasing number of manufacturers of modern kitchens and design-oriented living room furniture is therefore switching to the more inconspicuous and trendy 3 mm series-drilled holes. There is considerable demand for strong shelf supports that have sufficient load-bearing capacity in spite of having a reduced diameter. The 3 mm shelf support from Häfele is characterised by having a smart design and good load-bearing capacity. It is a further development of the new patented shelf support generation for 5 mm series-drilled holes.
The discreet row of 3 mm series-drilled holes is an aesthetic essential, particularly in furniture with glass shelves. Having drill holes in the cabinet side panels that are less conspicuous is also a requirement in cabinets with bright finishes and illuminated shelves. For these applications Häfele has developed a performance-optimised shelf support made from zinc alloy that meets the high quality requirements of the furniture industry. It is manufactured in our own manufacturing plant in Berlin, and has proven its high load-bearing capacity in accordance with European standard DIN EN 16337.
Smaller diameter, less material yet still with high load-bearing capacity? Clever engineering and a smart design with efficient material distribution make this possible. The slimline shelf support is held securely by a lug, which also prevents the shelf from being pulled out. In the case of shelf supports without lugs, a supporting sealing lip also provides a high degree of safety when subjected to heavy loads. The weight-optimised shelf supports with the Häfele brand design are suitable for fixing wooden and glass shelves in furniture. Häfele is therefore fulfilling the high demands that industry is making of 3 mm shelf supports. Well-known brand manufacturers are already using them in their furniture.
With regard to new European standards, the Häfele development engineers have developed an extremely strong shelf support generation with two-stage support for 5 mm series-drilled holes and have protected it by patent. These supports ensure that the shelf only drops a little way, and prevents the shelf support from being unintentionally pulled out under heavy load using serrations in the drill hole. This clever design has its advantages, particularly in the event of dynamic loading during load tests in accordance with the standard, using impact plates that simulate a folder falling over.
Installation is child’s play: The shelf support is inserted into the hole at a slight angle, then the shelf is placed on top of it. The weight of the shelf makes the shank connect flush with the side panel. When this occurs, the grooves drill into the wood, which provides additional stability and prevents the support from slipping out.
The new shelf support generation has been tested in accordance with the new European standard DIN EN 16337. Furthermore, the connectors are impressive because of their extremely slimline and appealing design, which predestines them for high-quality furniture manufacture. Like the 3 mm shelf supports, they are manufactured in large quantities for the furniture industry in Häfele’s own plant in Berlin thanks to innovative tool and machine technology.
With the new connectors, Häfele is extending its wide range of shelf supports made in its own plants and covering every possible application.
